Flu season is here and it could be with us as late as May. While there is no way to 100 percent prevent getting the flu there are many things you can do to help stay well. Use these tips to stay healthy during this peak time of illness.
Being properly hydrated on a daily basis can help fight off the flu. Extra fluids prevent dehydration, loosen mucus and keep your throat moist. Warm liquids can be especially beneficial because inhaling steam can reduce the spread of viruses in your upper respiratory tract.
Wash Your Hands
It’s important to frequently wash your hands, especially before eating. Flu viruses spread easily when people sneeze or blow their nose so make sure you are cleaning your hands.
Get Proper Sleep
Lack of sleep can have a huge impact on your immune system. Getting a full night’s sleep keeps your body’s natural defenses up. This also has the added bonuses of being well rested before hitting the road.
Get A Flu Shot
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone six months of age and older get the flu shot annually. The flu vaccination can reduce the risk of flu illness between 40-60 percent among the overall population.
Wear A Surgical Mask
If you are particularly paranoid about getting the flu, it might be a good idea to start wearing a flu mask when you go to highly populated areas. Using a surgical mask can help block airborne germs and they may also prevent the transmission of germs from your hands to your mouth or nose.
