U.S. freight rail traffic decreased 16.6% year over year in January 2016; however, the U.S. intermodal rail traffic increased 3.4% year over year during the same time period. The railroad fuel price index decreased 17.9% through December 2015.
According to the American Trucking Association, the truck tonnage index increased 1% in December 2015. Truckload freight decreased 33% year over year in January 2016. During January 2016, diesel prices per gallon decreased 7%, on average, to $2.14. Year over year, diesel prices are down 29%. The U.S. trucking workforce continues to struggle, but it increased in January 2016 by 1,500 employees.
In December 2015, U.S. container ports handled 1.43 million TEUs. The TEUs were down 3.4% from November since most of the holiday merchandise was already in the country. Ocean bulk freight rates decreased 32.9% in January 2016.
