Technology advancements in the supply chain are making logistics faster, more efficient, more accurate and cheaper. Learn about three supply chain trends affecting our industry:
Driverless trucks will continue to be developed. Automation is also being introduced into warehouses to reduce the number of workers. According to a survey from ARC, about 15 percent of warehouse executives said procuring autonomous mobile robots in the next three years was a priority. At this point, robots aren’t able to completely replace warehouse workers, but as technologies advance, there may be a decrease in the number of warehouse jobs.
2. Predictive Analytics
Investments in predictive analytics are increasing. Predictive analytics use data mining, statistics, machine learning and artificial intelligence to analyze current data to make predictions about the future. Predictive analytics are helping create more accurate forecasts, build ultra-lean fulfillment organizations and maintain optimized inventory levels at all points of the supply chain.
3. Labor Shortages
Just like the trucking industry, supply chain labor is scarce. According to a survey from SCM World, for every supply chain job lost in 2017, three jobs will be added. This will create a strain on the labor market. It will be more difficult and expensive for organizations to find qualified labor. Experts predict the labor shortage will drive larger investments into automated warehouse technologies.
